Global teams. The tools for global leadership in multicultural environments

Updated: Jul 5

The challenges & benefits of global teams

Globalization and the transformation of organizations create diverse and multicultural environments which are challenging nowadays. In this global and diverse business world are growing cultural, generational, communicative, and linguistic differences. Unfortunately, many disadvantages with potential. The truth is, multicultural teams have to face a variety of challenges which can become an advantage when they are managed adequately transforming them into a competitive advantage. To effectively perform globally and transversally, we want to highlight that English communication skills are key to transmit messages clearly and impactfully. Fact is, global leaders are very much identified and characterized by effective verbal, non-verbal, and emotional communication.

We are all leaders? - NO.

Authentic global leadership is a process of growing and learning. It is not a talent, gift or skill, rather than a life-long journey of taking consciousness. As Vince Lombardi once said: "Leaders are not born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else; through hard work." I absolutely agree here, "Leader" is not a titel, it is a "life-long transformative process of growth" with the purpose to serve and make an impact on people and the world. Nowadays, organizations give their employees the titel and define everyone as "leader" but do not support the necessary"process of leadership transformation."

Servant leadership has the main purpose of serving others and the organization to grow. The question arises are you a follower or a leader? As Brian Tracey states:"Leaders think and talk about solutions. Followers think and talk about the problem."

No doubt, a high5 of multicultural teams is the richness of know-how, experiences, and opinions that nurture the team and the organization. Innovation grows from diversity and inclusion. Big ideas are always the result of big talent and a safe environment that allows free speech and flow. The flow of unblocked communication is a key indicator of a healthy global environment. As the professor of language and leadership James C. Humes emphazised: "The art of communication, is the language of leadership."

Global leaders are conscious leaders

1. A CLEAR FOCUS ON VALUES AND PURPOSE

2. ALIGNMENT WITH PERSONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES & GOALS

3. BEING PRESENT IS KEY

4. A FUTURE VISION BASED ON PAST EXPERIENCES & LEARNINGS FROM ERRORS

5. NO-JUDGEMENT: WE ALL HAVE BACK-BACKS AND NOBODY IS PERFECT

6. GLOBAL LEADERS ARE CONSCIOUS, PRESENT, NON-JUDGEMENTAL, EXCELLENT ENGLISH COMMUNICATORS AGILE, STRATEGIC AND KIND

HOW CAN WE BECOME GLOBAL LEADERS?

What a big question!

The big answer: Global Communication and language skills are key to connect, impact, and influence around the globe. There are 2 pillars which are essential; trust in yourself and your team, collaboration instead of competition to communicate without fear to create impact.

THE ART OF COMMUNICATION, IS THE LANGUAGE OF LEADERSHIP (JAMES HUMES)

MOTIVATION AND OWNERSHIP

Motivation is the driver impacting on our actions. Motivation is highly influenced by our high or low energy-level, culture, and fearless attitude to face challenges.

How can we scale the motivation in multicult-teams?

Fact is, every team is different but an inclusive environment with psychological safety in which diverse personas, opinions, and skills are highly valued, make the difference. We should put attention on individuality to create a collective diverse intelligence that characterizes a global team as powerful and vulnerable at the same time.

Compromise with the team+projects is another key behaviour of global leadership.

Ownership requires clarity on the role, the expectations, and tasks to fullfill. I go even further, global leaders need to develop a strong affective bond with the team and projects, in other words, a strong labor relationship driven by a common purpose to impact.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Communication opens or closes doors.

Communication connects or disconnects.

Communication is the key for effective global leadership with mind, heart, and healthset.
